First, decide whether the area is safe
Stay out of standing water near electrical equipment and away from sagging ceilings, unstable surfaces or suspected sewage. Call the appropriate emergency service when there is immediate danger. This checklist is for organizing a restoration conversation; it cannot determine whether a room is safe to enter.
Limit further water only if you can do so safely
A familiar, safely accessible fixture shutoff may stop an indoor leak. Do not force a valve, touch wet electrical equipment or climb onto a roof during a storm. If the cause is uncertain, describe what you can see from a safe location and ask the appropriate professional to investigate.
Record a short, factual timeline
Write down when you discovered the water and when the room was last known to be dry. Photograph affected rooms and belongings only from safe positions. Note the weather or appliance use without turning a guess into a cause. Keep receipts and messages together using the documentation guide.
Prepare the assessment conversation
Have the address, affected rooms, water source if known and access restrictions ready. Explain any contamination concerns before equipment is proposed. Ask about availability, inspection charges, the intended work and who must authorize changes. You do not need to know the technical water classification to describe the situation accurately.
Keep the next stages separate
Stopping the leak, removing water, drying materials and rebuilding finishes are different tasks. Ask for each part in writing and confirm which business handles it. The extraction guide and drying guide explain useful follow-up questions. Do not treat equipment removal or a clean appearance as proof that every stage is complete.

Connect the guidance to the service
Review water extraction before discussing the assessment. Confirm the business, address availability, charges and written scope directly.
